Animated Vacation
An idea sparked by my guitar wielding brother Peter in the summer of 2005. I needed a project that could be completed within a short timespan and when he played and sung the lyrics of this old Halfdan Rasmussen song I was sold. The storyline and short length was a good fit and it instantly put some funny images in my mind. A storyboard was quickly produced as a basis for timing and cut to a temporary recording of the lyrics. I knew early on that I wanted the submerged ant to present as a
comedic break in the editing and tested accordingly with temp sound effects on the animatic before any animation was done. For one week I created all of the 3d models and rigs before getting Michael attached to the project to deliver backgrounds, matte paintovers, flowers and the excellent opening shot, which really defined the look of the film. The film was a great testbed for making shots which could be turned around quickly without sacrificing on the visual quality. Actual animation was kept to a minimum while relying on composition, editing and sound for comedic effect. The film was finished just in time for the Animation Competition at Scene Event 2005 where it won the first prize.
